Sulphur Inlaid Blanket Chest

Sulphur Inlaid Blanket Chest

The art of sulphur inlay was perfected by the German-speaking people of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The technique of pouring molten sulphur into carved-out designs was an inexpensive, yet effective method of decoration. This architecturally powerful piece is one of the most highly decorated of known sulphur inlaid furniture and is dated 1783.
